May 15-21 National Police & EMS Week

Let’s Celebrate! May 15th-21st is National Police and EMS week – a week to honor and thank the men and women who sacrifice their lives and time to serve and keep our community safe twenty-four hours, seven days a week.

These groups include EMS services, fire departments, rescure squads, volunteer groups, and emergency departments across the country.

Here are five ways to celebrate these men and women:

  • feeding a team with food – order pizzas, cater a meal for each shift, or host a cookout for teammates and their employees
  • treat members to discounts at local restaurants, entertainment centers, and on merchandise.
  • share your story with the media about how a practitioner saved or impacted your life
  • honor fallen personnel

Let’s Celebrate! May 11th is the sixth anniversary of Nora’s Home Executive Director, Kayla Lehmann. In 2011, Kayla received a kidney transplant. Her transplant experience later led her to involvement in Nora’s Home. The Nora’s Home Family could not be more thankful for Kayla’s hard work and dedication to the home. Kayla, congratulations and thank you!!

Let’s Celebrate! May is Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month – a month to educate people about the genetic disease, tell stories of hope, and encourage those around you to help in the search for a cure.

For those of you who don’t know, Cystic Fibrosis is a life-threatening disease that causes persistent lung infections limiting a person’s ability to breathe and eventually leading to respiratory failure. It is fairly common for those with Cystic Fibrosis to have a lung transplant.

To learn more about Cystic Fibrosis, visit American Lung Association or stay up to date with the disease by visiting Cystic Fibrosis News Today.

This month, let’s celebrate the gift of life, encouragement, stories of hope and the human ability to persevere.

Let's Celebrate! May High Blood Pressure Education Month

Let’s Celebrate! May is National High Blood Pressure Education Month – a month  to educate yourself and others about what high blood pressure is, how it can be prevented, and how it can be treated.

High blood pressure, also referred to as hypertension, is a disease in which blood flows through arteries at higher than normal pressures, pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps blood. Reducing high blood pressure can lower your risk for heart disease, stroke and heart attack.

Fact: About 1 of 3 U.S. adults (67 million people) have high blood pressure.

Plan with your loved ones and start getting heart healthy this May! Get your blood pressure checked and begin a healthy eating and physical activity routine.

For more information about high blood pressure, visit Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Nothing means more to people than having others take the time to positively impact someone else’s life. The commitment and heart of volunteers improves quality of life and fosters a more unified culture.

This week, I encourage you to show your appreciation towards volunteers and look for ways that you can give back to others. No one act of kindness is too small.

Here are two websites that can help lead you to volunteer opportunities:

If you are interested in volunteering at Nora’s Home, there are always ways to get involved! Find out more on our website.

Let's Celebrate Feb. 14-20 Random Acts of Kindness Week
February 14-20, 2016

Let’s Celebrate! This week, February 14-20, is Random Acts of Kindness Week. The little things in life truly do have the biggest impact. Each time that I am at Nora’s Home, a guest or employee goes out of their way to do something kind for me.

A couple weeks ago, Leo, the father of a lung transplant patient, paused his phone conversation to offer me a hair tie because he noticed my hair getting in the way of painting tiles. Each week, Bobby – a guest recovering from an LVAD implantation – and Leo would help me take down the tile painting station and help me load up my car. If I continued to share with you the examples that I witness weekly at Nora’s Home, it would end up being a novel. Maybe I’ll start blog posts about them?!

Take the time to do something for someone else this week. Your actions may be as big or small as you would like, but one thing is for sure – you will impact that person’s life in ways you can’t imagine.
